The columns give a striking impression of motion, the rings … Read more A substantial (24lbs each) pair of sculptural hurricanes by Maitland-Smith. The columns give a striking impression of motion, the rings appearing to tumble down from the glass above. Each is built as an open helix of alternating polished brass and blackened bronze rings (solid cast throughout, non-magnetic), spiraling from a weighted disc base to a broad brass bobeche with a center pricket for pillar candles. The hand-blown glass shades are banded in brass at the rim, with fine seed bubbles throughout — characteristic of the blowing process, not flaws. Sculptural enough to hold a wall or flank a fireplace unlit, and genuinely dramatic with candles burning. A rare form, we've been unable to locate another pair of its kind.

Founded in 1979, Maitland-Smith built its reputation on labor-intensive handwork at a time when most furniture production was moving the other direction. Their pieces included cast bronze, hand-cut tessellated stone, hand-blown glass, and hand-applied patinas. They are sold through high-end design showrooms around the world.
