Of unusually elegant and … Read more Exceptional English George III Hepplewhite Inlaid Mahogany Fold-Over Tea and Games Table, dating to circa 1790–1810. Of unusually elegant and refined proportions, the table is crafted in richly figured mahogany and distinguished by delicate geometric string inlay throughout.
The rectangular hinged leaf opens from the demilune-form table to create an expansive D-shaped playing or serving surface, an uncommon variation of the more familiar circular Georgian card-table form. The beautifully figured mahogany top is framed by fine contrasting stringing and retains a warm, richly patinated surface.
The serpentine/demilune apron is decorated with finely executed geometric inlay along its lower edge and is supported by four elegant square, tapering legs. The legs feature elongated rectangular panels and delicate oval inlaid motifs, continuing the restrained Neoclassical vocabulary of the apron and top.
The table exhibits traditional period cabinetmaking construction, including hand-worked joinery, an original wooden gate-leg mechanism, and period construction details consistent with late-18th-century English furniture. The underside retains evidence of hand workmanship and early joinery.
