A beautifully preserved signed Artist’s Proof of “Daybreak on the Marshes” by celebrated American wildlife artist Leslie C. “Les” Kouba (1917–1998).
Known for his evocative portrayals of waterfowl, upland birds, and the American sporting landscape, Kouba brought remarkable atmosphere and authenticity to his wildlife subjects. This tranquil marsh scene is an especially appealing example of his work, capturing the stillness and natural beauty of daybreak.
The print is pencil-signed by the artist and designated A.P. for Artist’s Proof. It also bears an embossed RLFA chop mark, associated with conservation-related limited editions produced for the Ruffed Grouse Society and the Ruffed Grouse License Fund of America. The embossing serves as an additional mark of authenticity.
The framed piece retains its original Abercrombie & Fitch Sporting Books, Prints and Paintings sales label. This is the original retailer’s tag that accompanied the artwork when it was sold. Based on the label, presentation, and conservation-edition markings, the print is estimated to have been produced and sold between approximately 1982 and 1988, with the mid-1980s—around 1984 to 1986—being the most likely period.
From a private collection and carefully preserved for decades.
