A commanding early 18th-century British oil portrait depicting King William III (1650–1702), presented in royal state robes and wearing the ceremonial insignia of the Order of the Garter.

Painted by an unidentified British School artist after the established royal portraiture of Sir Godfrey Kneller, this impressive oval oil on canvas captures the visual splendour and authority associated with late Stuart court portraiture. William is shown bust-length, his formal expression framed by a long dark allonge periwig and finely rendered falling lace cravat.

The King wears a pale court coat beneath a richly decorated, ermine-lined royal mantle. Particularly striking is the full ceremonial Collar of the Order of the Garter, with its sequence of roses and gold knots. Suspended below is the Great George pendant, depicting Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon.

Sir Godfrey Kneller was the dominant portrait painter of the British court around the turn of the 18th century and served as Principal Painter to the Crown. His portraits of William III and Mary II established recognisable official images of the monarchs that were subsequently repeated in numerous versions and formats. This painting is catalogued as “After Sir Godfrey Kneller”, acknowledging its relationship to Kneller’s established portrait type without asserting direct authorship or studio participation.

An especially close comparison was offered by Bonhams Edinburgh in October 2014, where an 18th-century oval portrait of William III, also described as after Sir Godfrey Kneller, was sold. The comparable work and the present painting are considered separate works derived from the same or a closely related portrait prototype.

The painting has notable Scottish provenance, having passed through Lindsay Burns & Company of Perth before being acquired and curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD® in 2026. It was subsequently privately loaned and exhibited at The Famous Lord Hill Museum in July 2026.

Importantly for collectors, the portrait was professionally examined and conserved in June and July 2026 by Vanessa Andrew M.A., Fine Art Conservator. Treatment included surface cleaning, selective varnish removal, treatment of small losses, conservation varnishing and localised retouching. Professional condition and treatment reports, together with conservation photography, accompany the work.

The historic canvas has been lined and displays extensive age-related craquelure consistent with a painting of this period. Historic restoration, retouching and overpainting are present, particularly within the dark background. An older discoloured varnish layer was retained following professional assessment. The substantial decorative gilt frame also exhibits historic repairs, alterations and restoration and is considered associated rather than necessarily original to the painting.

Presented within its imposing gilt frame, the portrait measures approximately 104 cm (40.9 in.) high by 86 cm (33.9 in.) wide overall. The painting itself was recorded by the conservator at approximately 73.5 × 63 cm (28.9 × 24.8 in.).

A substantial decorative work of British royal and historical portraiture, combining the established iconography of Kneller’s court portraits with the ceremonial magnificence of William III’s royal state dress and the Order of the Garter.
