An unusually elegant late 19th century French trumeau mirror combining carved giltwood, antiqued mirror glass, and a charming figural oil painting. The architectural frame is distinctly Louis XVI in character, with neoclassical beading, carved tassels, foliate ornament, crossed decorative elements, and a dramatic floral crest retaining a beautifully mellowed gilt surface.
Above the mirror plate is an intimate painted scene depicting two elegantly dressed women in a landscape, giving the piece the wonderful layered quality that makes antique trumeaux so compelling. The reverse retains handwritten French inventory or workshop labels referring to a pair of trumeaux and identifying painted subjects as “Music” and “Reading,” along with a “Made in France” marking. The mirror glass has extensive foxing that adds depth and atmosphere rather than detracting from its decorative presence.
At just over 56 inches tall, the proportions are particularly useful: substantial enough to anchor a mantel, console, or narrow wall without requiring the scale of a monumental architectural trumeau. It would be exceptional in an English country drawing room, French-inspired bedroom, collected entry hall, or layered above an antique chest.
