The richly worked brass panels depict lively figures and architectural scenes framed by ornate floral borders and decorative detailing. Designed with a slanted hinged lid and small casters for mobility, boxes of this type were traditionally placed beside the hearth and used to store fireplace coal, turf, kindling, or firewood. The dark wood-lined interior retains its wonderfully utilitarian character, while the warm aged brass and elaborate repoussé work make the piece highly decorative in its own right.
