This is a hand-woven embroidered vintage Japanese wedding Kimono purchased in Tokyo in the 1980s, but seems to have been used for a traditional wedding ceremony in the 1940s. Wedding Kimonos were used for traditional weddings for hundreds of years, if not thousands of years, and are still used for certain modern weddings.
According to a book on Kimonos by Nario Yamanaka, these gowns were "a distinctive aspect of Japanese culture ... was seen during the Heian Period (794-1185) when ladies of the court donned twelve layers of kimono for ceremonial occasions."
This Wedding Kimono portrays embroidered CRANES. The crane, or Tsuru, is a national treasure and is considered the bird that mates for life and is said to live for a thousand years. It symbolizes honor, good fortune, loyalty and longevity.
Included with the kimono is a bag used specifically for storage and a Kimono hanger which extends to include the side arm parts.
The last photo is from the book sited which shows a wedding photo with both a man and woman wearing wedding komonos.
