This is a vintage Chinese 3D shadowbox relief artwork depicting the traditional motif "Two Lions Playing with a Silk Ball" (Shuāng Shī Xì Qiú / 双狮戏球).
Art Form & Craftsmanship
Medium: A three-dimensional textile and mixed-media relief art piece mounted inside a glass shadowbox frame.
Materials: The lions are constructed with soft fur and faux hair, molded and hand-painted face masks, and silk ribbons. The ball in the center is a traditional padded satin silk ball (xiū qiú) detailed with gold embroidery.
Background: Painted backdrop depicting a floor embellished with silver geometric meander (leiwen) patterns, finished with a traditional red artist seal stamp in the lower-right corner.
Origin: Commonly crafted in China between the 1960s and 1980s, widely collected as decorative export art and traditional home decor.
Symbolism & Meaning
Guardian Lions (Foo Dogs): Represent protection, strength, and safeguarding the home against negative energy.
Silk Ball (Xiū Qiú): Symbolizes completeness, unity, and good fortune.
The Motif: In Chinese folk culture, lions playing with an embroidered ball—inspired by festive Lunar New Year lion dances—brings joy, prosperity, and peace to the household.
