Dating to the early 19th century, this exceptional Indian hand-painted cabinet is a richly decorative example of the painted furniture tradition of the Mughal and Rajput cultural sphere. Combining functional cabinetry with elaborate courtly portraiture and intricate floral ornamentation, the piece possesses the jewel-like visual character associated with the decorative arts of historic India.
Constructed of wood and extensively decorated in polychrome pigments, the cabinet presents a dramatic palette of deep black, warm ochre and gold, vivid green, red, and muted earth tones.
