"Sitzender Bar" or Seated Bear depicts a grizzly or brown bear as designed by August Gaul (1869-1921) in 1894. Prior to Gaul's death, Meissen bought 19 of his works and had his former pupil Max Esser shape them for production; this bear is from that collection, produced at Meissen until 1926. Charmingly rendered with an expressive face and one paw playfully placed on its foot, the figure measures approximately 8 1/4 inches long, 7 1/2 inches wide, and 9 inches tall. The piece is well marked: A. Gaul. 94 on the base next to the bear, blue Meissen swords and incised crossed swords and Weiss/Weifs mark next to Nachlass Gaul. M.E. (Max Esser) on the back of the base, and another incised crossed swords Weiss mark with piece number A1066 on the bottom.
A scarce triple signed factory first offered in perfect condition!
