An exceptional pair of mid-to-late 20th-century Chinese export ceramic elephant garden stools (or side tables). Epitomizing the timeless Hollywood Regency and Chinoiserie aesthetics, each matching stool is artfully molded as a caparisoned elephant standing atop a textured rectangular plinth. The elephants feature beautifully detailed trunks, ears, and expressive eyes, supporting a flat, hexagonal-faceted seat on their backs.The stools are finished in a brilliant, thick creamy-white crackle glaze.
Hand-painted blankets and headgear utilizing traditional Sancai-style jewel tones. The decorative blankets feature blooming blue-and-white lotus blossoms framed by deep ochre-gold and teal-green borders. The top seats are beautifully detailed with matching colorful bands centering a pierced geometric medallion, a traditional Chinese symbol of wealth and unity.
