Striking sculptural Serpentine / Cloud sofa (design attributed to) renowned American designer Vladimir Kagan and produced by Directional Furniture, circa 1980s.
An iconic example of Kagan's signature biomorphic approach to seating, this sofa features an extraordinarily fluid, undulating silhouette with a low, sweeping seat and separate cylindrical curved backrest. The dramatic red upholstery and polished metallic base emphasize the sofa's sculptural, almost floating appearance.
Kagan's Serpentine design was originally conceived in the 1950s and became one of the designer's most recognizable forms. The later Directional production brought the design into the postmodern era while retaining Kagan's characteristic organic curves and emphasis on furniture as sculpture.
The sofa is equally compelling viewed from the front or back and works particularly well as a freestanding centerpiece in a living room, gallery, showroom, office, hospitality environment or luxury interior.

The sculptural form remains intact and the seat and back cushions retain their shape.
