Dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1920, this striking antique Asian covered rice bowl is crafted of wood with a rich red lacquered finish and contrasting black domed lid and base. The substantial rounded form is accented with metal banding, decorative mounts, and an unusual strap-style closure.
The aged lacquer, traditional wood construction, and hand-worked metal elements give the piece wonderful character and a strong sculptural presence. At approximately 14” wide, it makes an impressive decorative object displayed on a console, chest, coffee table, or among a collection of Asian and global antiques.
