Medium: Oil on canvas, in pine frame.
Ken Higaki is a Los Angeles-based artist originally from Kagawa, Japan. Raised in the Japanese countryside and later in Portland, Oregon, he brings a layered cultural perspective to his practice.
His work explores instinctual intimacy, examining where identity, desire, and action meet.
Drawing on Venetian techniques and chiaroscuro, alongside figures reminiscent of yokai iconography, Higaki merges human and animal forms to evoke vulnerability, innocence, and volatility. The paintings unfold as staged moments in which the body becomes a site of tension, as these forms fuse to expose the friction between desire, control, and violence
