Snijders, dated 1973, presents a lush floral arrangement inspired by the centuries old Dutch tradition of flower painting. Abundant roses in shades of crimson, rose pink, blush, cream and white are joined by smaller blossoms and deep green foliage, gathered informally within a simple white ironstone tureen. The restrained background and tabletop, rendered in muted gray and green tones, allow the flowers to command the composition while lending the work a quiet, atmospheric quality. Several cut blooms rest beside the tureen, while scattered rose petals to the right introduce a particularly charming note of naturalism and recall the symbolic use of fallen petals found in historic Dutch still life painting. Snijders employs visible, confident brushwork throughout, giving the blossoms texture and dimension without sacrificing the softness associated with freshly gathered garden flowers. Signed L. Snijders and dated 1973 at the lower right, the painting is presented in a handsome molded frame with gilt and warm antiqued finishes that complement its subdued palette.
