Titled “She Crossed Our … Read more A wonderfully dramatic American marine painting by noted Massachusetts artist and illustrator Galen Joseph Perrett (1875–1949). Titled “She Crossed Our Bow,” the composition captures a small vessel surging over a mountainous deep-blue sea, its crew momentarily silhouetted against a luminous expanse of clouds and sky.
Perrett contrasts the dark, almost sculptural waves with brilliant passages of turquoise, white foam and atmospheric blue. The low viewpoint places the viewer directly amid the action, giving this large seascape tremendous movement and presence. It is an especially strong decorative painting for a coastal residence, study, library or traditionally furnished interior.
Oil on canvas, signed “Galen J. Perrett” in red at the lower right. The original label affixed verso identifies the artist and title and records the painting’s submission to the Twenty-Seventh Annual Exhibition in 1949, the final year of Perrett’s life. The label also retains its original handwritten price of $400, a considerable amount at the time.
