Designed by Arne Vodder in the 1960s and produced by Sibast Mobler in Denmark, the Model 227 dining table is the original transformer table, expanding from a humble 28.5” to a sizable 114”, accommodating up to 10 people as needed.
Model 227 includes four extensions – two rectangular leaves for the center of the table and a pair of demilune drop leaves that can hang off the ends via integrated brass hardware. The perimeter of the table features a sharply beveled edge while the legs expand slightly outward and then drop to a stiletto taper, details that set Vodder’s work apart from that of his contemporaries..
The rounded leaves also include a Vodder signature technique. While the edges of most racetrack- or pill-shaped tables are composed of individual blocks of wood, the round edges of the 227 leaves are made from five layers of teak, steamed and bent to shape. The latter method gives the appearance of an unbroken perimeter, a difficult to execute touch of elegance that few manufacturers undertook.
This particular example has all four of its original leaf extensions, giving it the full range of intended versatility. It has been expertly refinished and shows few signs of prior use. The table retains the Danish Furnituremakers’ Control tag, an association which Sibast joined in the early 1960s.
