Extremely rare Gallery level brutalist metal wall sculpture.
You just don't see them this grand.
There can be no doubt this is a large scale architectural commissioned piece for a corporate lobby, hotel or expansive modernist estate.
Presenting a rare, museum-grade piece of American studio art: a monumental mid-century modernist wall sculpture by listed abstract expressionist and sculptor Layman H. Jones Jr. (American, b. 1934). Hand-signed and dated 1976, this one-of-a-kind (OOAK) masterpiece showcases an exceptional 7 ½-foot horizontal scale, making it a definitive focal point for an elite residential great room, executive office, or grand hospitality entrance.
The sculpture features a complex, multi-layered dimensional relief composed of clustered biomorphic forms. The organic dish-like modules evoke surrealist "eye" motifs or hollowed seed pods, overlapping intricately to create a mesmerizing play of shadow and depth. Fabricated with expert torch-cut techniques, the piece boasts a spectacular burnished golden-brass patina. The bright, reflective metallic finish is masterfully balanced by darker, textured welds and heat-bloom halos along the rims, lending the massive structure a remarkably light and airy presence on the wall. Layman Jones was a prominent figure in the post-war mid-century modern art scene. His works are highly collectible and held in prestigious permanent public museum collections, including the Burchfield Penney center
Excellent vintage condition. Consistent with its age and Brutalist style, the piece displays a beautiful, authentic patina with original torch coloration and structurally sound, secure welded joints. No structural flaws. Uncleaned to preserve the artist's intended finish.
Layman Jones Jr. (born 1935) was a prominent artist and the former chair of art education at Buffalo State College.Exhibition History:
