The natural gray veining of the marble stands beautifully against the deep mahogany, while the original brass hardware and delicate brass feet complete the composition with understated neoclassical detail.
The Louis XVI style developed in France during the late 18th century, when furniture design turned toward the symmetry, architectural order, and classical ornament inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. Straight lines replaced the sweeping curves of the preceding Rococo period, and cabinetmakers introduced fluted columns, framed panels, tapered legs, and restrained metal mounts. These enduring forms remained influential for generations and were faithfully recreated by French craftsmen throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
The commode is arranged with three full-width drawers, offering excellent storage within a graceful and compact form. The upper drawer has been carefully designed with three framed sections across its façade, creating the visual impression of separate drawers while opening as one continuous drawer. Fine brass trim follows the geometry of the drawer fronts, complemented by original circular brass pulls and decorative escutcheons.
Fluted corner posts lead to slender tapered legs finished with original brass-mounted feet, reinforcing the classical character of the design. The richly figured mahogany has developed a warm, deep patina that beautifully complements the clean white surface of the Carrara marble.
