Set of Four Biedermeier Dining Chairs, Germany, circa 1820
This elegant set of four Biedermeier dining chairs dates to around 1820 and reflects the restrained sophistication that defines the German Biedermeier period. Crafted in richly figured walnut veneer on a solid wood frame, the chairs showcase clean architectural lines balanced by refined decorative details, making them equally suited to period interiors and contemporary homes.
The gently curved crest rails highlight the beautiful walnut grain, while the distinctive open backrests feature finely carved lyre splats with stylized acanthus leaves—a classical motif inspired by ancient Greek and Roman design. This neoclassical ornament provides an elegant focal point without compromising the understated character that made Biedermeier furniture so enduring.
The chairs stand on slender, tapering square legs that emphasize their light, graceful proportions. Their seats have been upholstered in a luxurious gold striped damask fabric with subtle floral motifs, adding warmth and sophistication while complementing the rich tones of the walnut. Decorative brass nailhead trim provides a refined finishing touch.
Professionally restored in our German workshop, the chairs have been finished with a traditional hand-applied shellac polish, enhancing the natural depth and chatoyance of the walnut veneer while preserving their authentic early 19th-century character.
Whether placed around a dining table, used as elegant side chairs in a living room, or incorporated into a sophisticated study or bedroom, this set exemplifies the timeless appeal of German Biedermeier furniture. Their refined craftsmanship, harmonious proportions, and neoclassical detailing make them an exceptional choice for collectors, interior designers, and anyone seeking authentic antique seating.
