An exceptional French Art Deco haberdashery display cabinet produced during the late 1930s for Laine du Pingouin, one of France’s most iconic wool manufacturers.
Manufactured by Cartonnages Mulliez-Richebé, Lille, as confirmed by the original maker’s label preserved underneath the cabinet, this rare professional mercery display retains all ten original drawers, its embossed faux crocodile paper covering, original metal drawer pulls and surviving original cardboard dividers with printed colour references.
Originally designed for the presentation and storage of darning wool and haberdashery supplies, the cabinet features beautifully preserved advertising graphics on both side panels, including the famous Pingouin mascot and the slogan “La Grande Marque Nationale”.
Its authentic patina reflects decades of commercial use and has deliberately been preserved. The cabinet has never been over-restored, allowing its historical character to remain intact.
Both highly decorative and historically significant, it is equally suited to an interior, a boutique, a collector of French advertising or a private cabinet of curiosities.
The original manufacturer’s label “Cartonnages Mulliez-Richebé – Lille” remains attached beneath the cabinet, providing an exceptional level of provenance rarely encountered on surviving shop fittings of this period.
