This vase is beyond gorgeous! It has a grounded presence with the saturated cobalt blue color of the porcelain and the hand applied pure silver overlay of a cougar, a deer, dragonflies, and trees appears to dance off the surface of this decorative vase. The piece was designed and manufactured in 1993 in Taxco, Mexico by Emilia Castillo for the legendary workshop Los Castillo, during the peak time when her most coveted creative period occurred. The "12" pattern featuring a cougar (or jaguar), deer, dragonflies, and trees is one of Emilia Castillo's most iconic and highly collected wildlife motifs from her 1990s Plata Pura collections.
This striking vase features a rich cobalt blue porcelain body, hand-decorated with an elegant motif of a cougar stalking a deer among the trees and dragonflies, rendered in applied pure silver. The contrast between the saturated blue ground and the luminous silver detailing exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and artistic sophistication for which Los Castillo is internationally renowned.
The piece is signed and dated, 1993, bearing the Emilia Castillo signature used in her formative design years-making this example particularly desirable to collectors of Mexican modernist decorative arts. Emilia Castillo, daughter of Antonio Castillo, played a pivotal role in expanding the Los Castillo legacy beyond silver into mixed-media works that seamlessly blended ceramics, silver, and sculptural design.
Founded in the mid-20th century, Los Castillo of Taxco is widely regarded as one of the most important Mexican silver ateliers, celebrated for pioneering modernist forms, indigenous motifs, and experimental materials. Emilia Castillo's work continues this tradition, bridging fine art and functional design with pieces that feel both timeless and contemporary.
This vase functions beautifully as a decorative centerpiece, objet d'art, or sculptural accent, equally at home in modern, eclectic, or curated interiors.
