On offer is a striking, stylized 20th-century watercolor landscape by Claude Clark (1915-2001) that heavily draws inspiration from the American Regionalist movement. The painting features a large, angular red barn buried in deep, rolling snowbanks under a heavy, dramatic sky. In the background, a distant farmhouse and stylized, jagged mountain peaks sit beneath a layered blue horizon.
THE STYLE & TECHNIQUE: The sweeping, rhythmic, ribbon-like swells of the snowdrift in the foreground and the stark geometric lines of the architecture are textbook indicators of Precisionism and Regionalism. The single, twisting bare tree overlapping the front of the red barn acts as a powerful central focal point.
Executed in watercolor and gouache on paper, Clark used a controlled wash technique to build gradient depth in the sky and cast stark, deep-blue shadows across the snow to create high-contrast light.
THE ARTIST: While the aesthetic of this piece directly borrows from the mid-century Midwest regional style, this is an early work by Claude Clark (1915–2001). Clark was a celebrated mid-century African American painter who signed his works "C. Clark".
He was heavily active from the 1930s through the late 20th century. He studied at the Barnes Foundation and was heavily involved in WPA (Works Progress Administration) art projects, which frequently funded regional landscapes and rural scenes.
This piece is an early or formative years work for this artist. Although he worked in watercolors, he later became famous for painting figures, landscapes and scenes of the African diaspora using a heavy palette knife, impasto technique with thick, physical texture.
