Crafted in France circa 1880, the substantial Louis XVI-style bureau plat is constructed of richly figured mahogany and lavishly embellished with finely cast gilt-bronze mounts throughout.

The rectangular top retains its original three-panel black leather writing surface, decorated with gilt-tooled borders and enclosed by a wide mahogany surround edged in polished brass. The principal side is arranged with seven drawers surrounding a generous central kneehole, providing ample storage for documents and office essentials. Each drawer front is framed with gilt-bronze beading and decorated with elaborate neoclassical mounts featuring lion masks, ring-form handles, ribbon-tied garlands, foliate drops, and ornate escutcheons. The wide central drawer is enriched with a scrolling ormolu frieze, adding further architectural presence.

The desk stands on eight tapered legs mounted with classical floral and foliate decoration and ending in gilt-bronze sabots. Fluted corner blocks, paneled sides, and applied bronze moldings continue around the entire case. The reverse is fully finished with paneled mahogany surfaces and open shelving, allowing the desk to be placed prominently in the center of a room and used as a partner desk, executive desk, writing desk, or library table.

All locks are in working order, and one key is included. The original leather displays age-related wear consistent with its history. The desk is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich mahogany patina with beautifully aged gilt-bronze mounts throughout.
