An extraordinary and highly sculptural example of Bohemian Art Nouveau glass, this rare vase showcases the refined artistry and technical brilliance of early 20th-century glassmaking. Hand-blown in the celebrated Candia Papillon decoration, it combines luminous iridescence with an intricate, nature-inspired form that epitomizes the Jugendstil movement.
The bulbous pear-shaped body is executed in colourless Candia glass, enriched with a warm golden underlayer and finished with the distinctive Papillon (“butterfly wing”) effect. Created using rolled-in metallic particles and controlled reduction, the surface shimmers with a captivating full-spectrum iridescence — shifting between rich amber gold, electric blues, deep violets, pinks, and peacock greens depending on the light. The result is a dynamic, almost living surface that constantly changes with movement and perspective.
What makes this piece truly exceptional is its dramatic applied decoration. Multiple hand-pulled, twisted glass tendrils rise organically from the shoulder, curling and looping upward before reconnecting elegantly at the wide flared rim. Each “handle” is individually formed from the same iridescent glass, creating a delicate cage-like structure that feels both architectural and organic. This sculptural treatment reflects the core ideals of Art Nouveau design — fluidity, natural inspiration, and seamless integration of form and ornament.
