A handsome grouping of four Swedish books bound in tooled leather with marbled paper boards, drawn from an early-twentieth-century Stockholm library. Each spine is fitted with raised bands and stamped in gilt, and two of the four—companion volumes by the beloved illustrator and author Albert Engström—share a matching gilt vignette of a sailboat cresting the waves at the foot of the spine.
The set includes William J. Locke's Valda Romaner II: Avgudar, Erik Axel Karlfeldt's Flora och Bellona (a celebrated collection by the Swedish Nobel laureate poet), and two works by Albert Engström: Ränningehus – Adel, Präster och Smugglare and Min 5:te Bok – Genom Mina Guldbågade Glasögon. Publication imprints found within the volumes range from 1927 to 1942, issued by the Stockholm houses of B. Wahlströms, Isaac Marcus, and Albert Bonniers.
Sold together as a single lot, these volumes bring the authentic character of an old Scandinavian library to a shelf, and will suit a collector of Swedish literature or anyone drawn to the warmth of aged leather and marbled paper.
