Its broad rectangular form is enriched by three deeply carved façade panels, each composed of pointed arches, elongated lancets, quatrefoil-inspired details, and scrolling foliage. Together, these architectural motifs create the appearance of a miniature Gothic arcade across the front.
Gothic Revival design flourished throughout 19th century Europe as artists, architects, and furniture makers rediscovered the craftsmanship and symbolism of the Middle Ages. Pointed arches, tracery, clustered columns, and carved foliage returned to interiors, lending furniture the character of medieval church screens, choir stalls, and paneled rooms. Trunks were especially well suited to the style, continuing the centuries-old tradition of combining secure household storage with decorative carving.
The substantial oak lid opens to reveal a spacious interior retaining impressive hand-forged iron strap hinges. These iron fittings speak to traditional cabinetmaking methods and provide an important counterpoint to the carved exterior. A molded lower register, scalloped apron, and sturdy extended feet complete the trunk’s grounded silhouette.
