A substantial Japanese-style composition stone garden lantern with a beautifully weathered surface and a rich covering of natural moss and lichen acquired over decades in the garden.
The lantern's well-balanced proportions give it the strong architectural presence of a traditional Japanese Kasuga form. A tall tapered finial rises above a broad, gently sloping roof whose deep overhanging eaves curve downward beyond the light chamber, recalling the protective rooflines of traditional Japanese architecture. The square light chamber has openings on all four sides, allowing light to filter through.
The pedestal is distinguished by a circular opening that lightens the otherwise solid form. Below, the corners of the rectangular base curve gently upward, providing a pleasing contrast to the roof's downward-sweeping eaves. These thoughtful details give the lantern a balanced, harmonious design.
Whether placed beside a garden path, overlooking a pond, or nestled among ferns and hostas, this lantern serves as both a sculptural focal point and a classic garden ornament. Its naturally weathered surface allows it to blend effortlessly into the landscape, appearing entirely at home in both formal and informal garden settings.
Constructed in modular sections that rest one upon another by their own weight.
Probably American, 20th Century.
