Pen and black ink on paper, mounted within a decorative printed border bearing the artist's name. A lively and expressive ink study depicting a standing female nude in a dynamic contrapposto pose, her arms raised and body rendered with the fluid, confident line for which Gustave Doré is renowned. Executed with swift, economical strokes, the drawing demonstrates Doré's remarkable ability to suggest volume, movement, and anatomical form through a seemingly spontaneous network of pen lines. The figure is framed within an oval reserve enclosed by a decorative Art Nouveau-inspired border, creating an elegant presentation that emphasizes the sculptural quality of the model. The abbreviated treatment of the limbs and contours, together with the vigorous hatching and searching lines, reveal the work's character as a preparatory or academic study, offering insight into the artist's draughtsmanship and creative process. Although celebrated primarily for his monumental illustrations of The Divine Comedy, Don Quixote, Paradise Lost, and the Bible, Doré maintained a lifelong interest in the human figure. Studies such as the present work demonstrate the technical mastery that underpinned his celebrated published compositions, combining academic observation with a highly personal and energetic graphic language. The drawing possesses considerable visual appeal, balancing the immediacy of a sketch with the refinement of a finished composition. Its expressive linearity and emphasis on movement place it firmly within the tradition of nineteenth-century French academic draughtsmanship. The sheet shows overall age toning and scattered handling marks consistent with age. Minor surface abrasions and small areas of loss are visible to the decorative border, particularly in the upper and right margins. Light staining and minor foxing are present, together with slight surface rubbing. The drawing itself remains clear and strong, with the ink retaining good contrast. Overall condition is consistent with age and supports attractive display. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
