An excellent … Read more A rare and sculptural Fledermaus table attributed to Jacob & Josef Kohn or Thonet, dating from circa 1900. An excellent example of Central European furniture from the Vienna Secession and Jugendstil period, the table demonstrates the elegant use of bentwood construction closely associated with the great Viennese furniture manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Constructed from beech wood and beech plywood, the design features a circular tabletop above a rhythmic arrangement of slender vertical supports. Small spherical wooden details punctuate the structure, while the circular lower platform visually anchors the composition. The restrained geometry, repetition of vertical elements and elegant circular form give the table a strong architectural and sculptural presence characteristic of progressive Viennese design around 1900. The original manufacturer’s label or stamp is no longer present. Based on its construction, period and design, the piece is attributed to Jacob & Josef Kohn or Thonet. The table has been carefully refurbished and finished with traditional shellac polish, preserving its period character and attractive wood grain. Minor signs of use and age remain consistent with the age of the piece.
