Depicted in a wonderfully … Read more Here is a circa 1930s cast iron English Setter dog doorstop, attributed to Hubley Manufacturing Company. Depicted in a wonderfully animated walking or pointing stance with one front paw raised, the full-bodied figure captures the elegant profile and long feathered coat of the sporting breed.

Cast in two joined sections, the dog retains a wonderfully timeworn cream and brown painted surface with extensive crazing, oxidation and wear that gives the piece tremendous character. At over 15 inches long, it has a substantial scale and looks fantastic displayed on the floor beside a door, fireplace or entryway, or simply used as a sculptural decorative object.

Hubley was especially well known for its cast iron figural doorstops during the early 20th century, with sporting dogs among its most recognizable designs. This example is unmarked and therefore attributed to Hubley based on the form, construction and documented examples of the same design.

I especially love the wonderfully imperfect surface of this one—the layers of age and wear give it the feeling of a piece that has been around and loved for generations. A charming addition to an English country, traditional or collected interior, and particularly fun for a dog or sporting enthusiast. See less
