The couple is shown strolling in refined late 18th-century dress within an exceptionally ornate rococo border featuring scrolling acanthus, floral garlands, ribbons, shellwork, decorative cartouches, and a heraldic crest surmounted by an eagle. The gentleman wears a tailored red frock coat, waistcoat, breeches, riding boots, and a tricorne hat, while the lady is dressed in a graceful pink jacket over a full white skirt with a green sash and an elaborate feathered hat, reflecting the fashionable promenade dress of the period. Published in paris by rittner & goupil, this print belongs to the celebrated costumes du quadrille historique – bals de l'opéra series. Designed by achille devéria with ornamental borders by j.j. Grandville, the series was produced for the famous historical costume balls held at the paris opéra during the mid-19th century. Today these lithographs are admired for their elegant hand coloring, refined engraving, and outstanding decorative appeal.
