Unlike a conventional perched portrait, this composition presents the falcon in a dramatic behavioural study. The bird bends over its prey, allowing the compact form, powerful talons and finely rendered plumage of the merlin to be seen in detail. Lilian m. Medland’s sensitive monochrome treatment gives the scene both scientific interest and strong decorative presence. The plate was created for charles stonham’s important natural-history publication the birds of the british islands, illustrated by lilian m. Medland and published in london by e. Grant richards in the early 20th century.
