A signature Maitland-Smith trompe l’oeil piece where the sides of the desk are clad in tooled leather made to look like a stacked shelf of leather-bound classics (Homer’s Iliad, Dickens, Tolstoy, Steinbeck, Shakespeare, etc.), each with gilt-stamped titles and fleur-de-lis/floral tooling. Rather than any one portion be or panel wrapped in leather, each piece (both pedestals and top) is fully-wrapped in green leather.
The brass plate on the interior reads “Maitland-Smith” confirming the maker. The desktop and drawer fronts are wrapped in olive-green tooled leather with gilt-scrolled borders, brass ring pulls, and the whole case has serpentine/bow-front curved corners. The kneehole with drawers on both left and right pedestals makes this a true “partner’s desk” — usable from both sides. From the late 20th century, made in the Philippines (Maitland-Smith’s standard manufacturing base for this era), this desk functioned as an Austin attorney’s executive desk from the late 1990’s until 2025.
This exact “faux library” motif is one of the company’s most recognizable and desirable designs — comparable desks and cabinets with the same book-spine treatment routinely sell in the thousands in good condition. Given the visible wear (lifting leather at the pedestal corners and some slight edge wear), we’ve priced this statement piece at a bargain for lovers of the unique style Maitland-Smith is known for.
The writing surface is devoid of any major gouges or crazing, plus interiors still show their marbled/tooled artwork cleanly, as this desk was used by a single owner, and there is no degradation of the frame — an important assessment of leather-clad pieces since the leather (not the wood) is what usually degrades first.
It will make an exceptional addition to the collection of any lover of high end, whimsical statement furnishings.
