An exceptional original 19th-century hand-colored lithograph depicting the magnificent Paradisaea intermedia, or De Vis’s bird-of-paradise, from the celebrated ornithological works associated with British naturalist and publisher John Gould.
The composition captures the bird in profile, perched amid softly rendered tropical foliage, with a dramatic cascade of brilliant orange-red tail plumes. Its golden-yellow crown, deep plum-colored breast, and finely articulated feathers are rendered with the extraordinary precision and saturated hand coloring for which Gould’s natural-history plates are renowned.
This listing is for one original Gould bird print framed but others are available in my Shop if one wants to make a stunning bird wall.
The work belongs to Gould’s celebrated body of bird-of-paradise imagery produced with artist and lithographer William Matthew Hart during the late 19th century. Comparable Gould and Hart plates were issued as hand-colored lithographs on wove paper and printed in London by Mintern Brothers.
This authentic antique lithograph is elegantly presented beneath TruGuard UV-protective conservation glass, matching the professional conservation framing used throughout the collection. It is surrounded by a generous pale celadon mat with fine hand-ruled borders and housed in a slender gilt frame with restrained decorative corner details.
A particularly striking and collectible example of Victorian ornithological art, this piece would make an elegant statement in a library, study, living room, bedroom, or curated gallery wall. It works beautifully in traditional, English country, Chinoiserie, Grand Tour, botanical, and layered collected interiors.
