Early 20th-century grand-scale wall plaque replicating the iconic "Milton Shield," originally designed by French silversmith Léonard Morel-Ladeuil for Elkington & Co. in 1867 for the Paris Exhibition.
Cast in a heavy, molded mineral stone composite, this shield features a high-relief composition illustrating epic battles and scenes from John Milton’s Paradise Lost. The center medallion beautifully captures the Archangel Raphael recounting the war in Heaven to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Surrounding the central scene are registers depicting the conflict between the heavenly hosts and the fallen angels, all bordered by an ornate scrollwork rim.
The plaque features a highly stylized, brown and cream finish resembling polished agate, giving it a rich, old-world presence. At 32 inches tall, this substantial piece serves as an exceptional architectural statement for a library, grand entryway, or eclectic gallery wall.
Measures 32" x 24.5" x 2.5".
Fitted with a secure hanging bracket and heavy-duty wire on the reverse side.
