Elevate your tablescape or antique collection with this exceptional piece of American Victorian history. Crafted by the highly prestigious silversmiths Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. of Wallingford, Connecticut, this circa 1880–1886 "Suspension" covered butter dish (Model No. 176) is a testament to the opulence of late 19th-century dining.
The piece features a towering overhead bale handle topped with an ornate scrolling crest and a central hook designed to elegantly suspend the domed lid out of the way during service. The dome itself is beautifully adorned with intricate, hand-engraved aesthetic floral motifs and is crowned with a highly sought-after, detailed figural bird finial. The footed basin features classic scrolling legs and dual side brackets specifically designed to cradle a master butter knife.
Extremely rare for its age, this set remains structurally complete and includes its original, removable silver-plated draining insert plate, which historically separated the butter from the crushed ice below. Stamped on the underside with the authentic circular "Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. Treble Plate" hallmark and model number 176.
