Signed attribution and identification labels on the reverse. Not signed. A refined portrait study depicting a young woman shown in three-quarter profile, her gaze directed to the left. The sitter wears a white veil adorned with an ornamental band enriched with coins and decorative elements, evoking an Orientalist taste characteristic of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The composition is distinguished by its delicate chromatic range, luminous flesh tones, and the artist’s confident, rapid brushwork, particularly evident in the treatment of the drapery and facial modelling. The work relates to Lodovico Pogliaghi’s activity as a painter and illustrator alongside his better-known achievements as sculptor, architect, and designer. Pogliaghi, one of the leading figures of Italian eclecticism, is celebrated for major commissions including the monumental doors of Milan Cathedral and numerous decorative projects throughout Italy. Portrait studies such as the present work reveal his remarkable sensitivity to character and expression, combining academic discipline with a modern painterly immediacy. The reverse bears handwritten labels identifying the work as Giovine Donna in costume orientale and attributing it to Lodovico Pogliaghi (1857–1950). Overall: very good condition.
