A handsome and authentic American stoneware storage jug dating to the late 19th century, featuring a classic off-white/eggshell/gray salt-glazed body contrasted by a rich chocolate/coffee-brown Albany slip glazed shoulder and neck. This substantial utilitarian vessel was discovered on an old farmhouse in Fayette County, Texas, and retains its original unmarked surface with wonderful age and character.
Wheel-thrown with a broad cylindrical body, rounded shoulder, rolled rim, and hand-applied strap handle, the jug exemplifies the craftsmanship of regional American potteries during the period. While unmarked, its construction and glaze are consistent with quality utilitarian stoneware produced approximately 1890. It may represent the work of a Central Texas pottery, although the exact maker remains unknown.
Originally intended for storing whiskey, vinegar, molasses, syrup, oil, or other household staples, today it makes an exceptional decorative accent in a farmhouse, primitive, Americana, or rustic interior. Display it alone, with other antique crocks, or as a sculptural statement on a shelf, sideboard, or kitchen island.
A beautiful example of authentic American country stoneware with strong decorative appeal and genuine Texas farmhouse provenance.
