This painting depicts an incident taken … Read more Guido Reni (1575–1642) was one of the premier painters of the Italian Baroque era. This painting depicts an incident taken from the Old Testament, Book of Daniel, but was added by the Christian Church, as it does not appear in the Tennach. As the virtuous and beautiful Susannah bathes in her garden, she is approached by two elders who, lusting after her, threaten to accuse her of adultery if she does not sleep with them. She refuses and is falsely accused by them, but her innocence is proved and prevents her from being stoned. Her accusers are instead stoned for slander and false testimony. So everything works out OK for Susannah.

The paintings was executed in the late 19th century (c. 1890) by the Italian artist Guilio Bertoncelli (active 1880-1920) who was a master copyist of Old Master artists.

There is at least one "original" version of this painting by Reni and it is in the National Gallery, London.
