SUBJECT: The painting depicts an ancestral Puebloan stone ruin resting on a rocky mesa under a vast, high-key sky. Niblett uses a muted, monochromatic color palette dominated by sepia, earth tones and warm creams to evoke a sense of deep time, solitude and the baking desert heat. A prominent foreground boulder grounds the scene, while the crumbling stone masonry of the dwelling features a small open doorway and a wooden ladder leaning against the structure.

THE ARTIST: The work displays Gary Niblett’s background in precise composition, control over dramatic lighting, and loose yet descriptive brushwork. Born and raised in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Niblett grew up surrounded by authentic ranch life, which heavily influenced his later career.
After studying at the ArtCenter College of Design in Los Angeles, Niblett spent eight years as a background artist for Hanna-Barbera animation studios, working on legendary shows like Scooby-Doo and The Jetsons. This commercial background refined his mastery over light, shadow and environmental depth.
In 1973, he left commercial art to focus entirely on fine art, moving back to New Mexico. Just three years later, in 1976, he became the youngest member ever elected to the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America (CAA).
Niblett has won numerous gold and silver medals from the CAA and has exhibited his work internationally in London, Paris, Beijing, and Moscow. His large-scale paintings hang in permanent collections like the New Mexico State Capitol Building.
Today, he resides with his wife in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they have lived in an adobe-style home since 1980. He holds an "Emeritus" status within the Cowboy Artists of America.

THE PHYSICAL ARTWORK: The painting was done in oil paint and executed on a textured hardboard panel (commonly referred to as Masonite). The back reveals a distinct waffle-patterned screen backing typical of mid-to-late 20th-century hardboard. A faint, weathered stamp is present in the center, though it has faded beyond legibility. The painting is housed in a heavy, classic gold-gilded, carved wooden frame secured with wire hanging hardware on the reverse.

DATE: Gary Niblett proudly adds "CA" (Cowboy Artists of America) after his signature on works created after his election in 1976. As this work is signed simply "G. Niblett,” which strongly indicates this piece is an early, pre-1976 career work, which makes it historically interesting to collectors tracking his artistic evolution.
