Details:
Woodblock print by Bakufu Ohno. It was originally published in the late 1930s as part of his famous 72-design series titled Dai Nihon gyorui gashu (Great Japanese Fish Picture Collection, also known as Familiar Fishes of Nippon). This vertical ōban composition features five realistic crucian carp navigating an elegant underwater pond scene surrounded by flowing pond weeds and soft blue flowers. First editions from 1938 feature vibrant metallic silver mica highlights in the water current lines. The piece shown here reflects a popular, beautiful 1950s re-carved edition printed by the publisher from newly carved blocks, which typically softens the color background slightly. Measures approx 10"w x 15"h
Condition:
Wonderful condition overall. This print exhibits very little fading and the colors are still rich and vibrant with untrimmed edges.
