But it’s a vintage wicker eel trap. They would be set in water and an eel would swim into the hole on the side. Once inside, there are strands of wicker that make it impossible to swim back out. The top has a long wicker stopper when removed allows you to release the eel. This is a great decor item in a farmhouse, rustic lodge or boho chic room decor. It certainly is a great item to ask if anyone knows what it is. A conversational piece for sure.
