Panels of this scale and complexity were commissioned exclusively for palaces (afin in Yoruba) or the compounds of high-ranking chiefs. They served as portals to highly sacred spaces, physically reinforcing the boundary between the public and the elite. Carved entirely from a single trunk of hardwood, the screen demonstrates master-level structural planning. The openwork format allows light and air to move through while presenting layered allegorical imagery.

The composition relies on distinct horizontal registers to dictate structural and spiritual order. The upper tiers commonly reflect the order of the human and ancestral court, whereas the lower openwork bands plunge into the untamed power of the wilderness.

Animal Dualities and Symbols:
The Centered Serpents: A continuous python motif splits the grid down the center. In regional cosmology, the snake serves as a cosmic link connecting the celestial realm with the earth.
The Quadruped Predators: The middle bands present repeating patterns of leopards or chameleons, heavily associated with royal surveillance, agility, and absolute authority over the domain.
The Supporting Caryatid: At the base, a stylized female figure supports the entire weight of the architectural screen. In West African sculpture, women are frequently depicted as the foundation of society and lineages, embodying fertility, life-giving power, and the ultimate preservation of divine law.
