Early Georgian mahogany kettle stand of the mid 1700s. With its dish top, this stand is ready to hold a tea kettle and anticipates slight spills with its carved edge. The low height is also engineered to hold the kettle rather than tea cups. Note that the carved edge is part of the block of wood that forms the top and is not a separate piece that was glued on later. The proportion of this piece is notable in that this easily tipped form is well designed by the maker to give it a broader stance. Below is a substantial stem above a spiral twist carved urn. The pedestal top holds three elegant cabriole legs which terminate in snake feet with pads and ambitiously carved with crossed leafage emanating from a rosette and terminating in a flower. This completes at a central turned drop below the shaft .
Height 23", diameter of the top 10 3/4" by 11 and 1/8", width overall 14".
Importantly, the measurements of the top show the excess shrinkage across the grain of the top board after hundreds of years of age
