Chinese polychrome-decorated architectural panel, constructed with intricate basketwork and metal details.
Dating back to the 1920's this specific type of high-relief work depicts architectural elements like houses and temples set in stylized gardens These fragile gems are intricately assembled against the heavy basket weave. Drama is achieved here with rooftops done in perspective and arcade facades of the shrines. The room interiors have painted mirrors. All this is enhanced by age-softened reds, greens, pinks, blues, and golds. This is a sizable piece and could be used as a tabletop item on a generous chest or hung above on the wall. The backside has four Chinese characters written in traditional script and read from right to left, top to bottom (Quan, Zhou, Dian Lu). When combined, Quanzhou refers to the famous historical port city in Fujoan Province, China. The final two characters translate to "Lu Shop". Similar examples of these panels belong to the estate of the famous American artist and designer Tony Duquette.
