I very often draw upon the happy, exciting childhood I had, growing up by the ocean in Southern California. My family was very musical so I was always surrounded by all kinds of beautiful and inspiring music. My father played great jazz piano and classical music, my mother was classically trained as an opera singer but also sang the old ballads and show tunes as well as playing Mozart and Rachmaninov on our beautiful grand piano. My grandfather was a musician in Hollywood and played all of the woodwind instruments for the Dave Rose band on the Red Skelton show, Phil Harris, Jack Benny and others. So music was the life of our family and it made for a very exciting, wonderful and magical childhood. This painting is very reflective of that time in my life and of many years later as I began to play different instruments and find my own love of and devotion to the musical world. The color and whimsical feeling and style of this painting shows my love of the beauty of all colors and how they bring such joy and energy to life! I like to add lots of people and animals in my paintings as they are an important part of my life. I called this painting "The Magical Recital" because I have always wanted to play an impromptu recital on the piano and create a magical piece of music that reflects the happiness of my adventurous childhood!
