Substantial in both scale … Read more A striking vintage Italian ceramic sculpture depicting a reclining male lion in a classic recumbent pose. Substantial in both scale and presence, the piece measures an impressive 20 inches long and makes a wonderful statement piece for a console, credenza, mantel or library.

The lion is beautifully modeled with an expressive face, extended front paws, muscular body and a deeply sculpted, flowing mane. Hand-painted details and layered glazes in warm shades of caramel, ochre, tan, cream and deep brown accentuate the sculptural form, while a high-gloss finish gives the piece a rich, dimensional appearance.

The unglazed underside is hand marked “Made in Italy / 1424/2.”

A handsome example of vintage Italian decorative ceramics with wonderful scale and character, equally suited to Hollywood Regency, traditional, eclectic or maximalist interiors.

Condition
