Kindersley was among the most influential British lettering artists of the 20th century. After beginning his career as an apprentice to celebrated sculptor, letter cutter and typographer Eric Gill, Kindersley established his own workshop in Cambridge and became internationally recognized for his work in lettering, typography, stone carving and alphabet design.

This unusually fluid alphabet demonstrates Kindersley’s extraordinary command of the drawn letter. Lowercase forms are arranged vertically across a warm terracotta ground, surrounded and intertwined by sweeping calligraphic flourishes. The overlapping lines transform the alphabet from a functional sequence of letters into an almost abstract graphic composition.

According to the original informational label retained on the reverse, the design belongs to a group of 24 freely drawn alphabets printed and hand painted by David Kindersley, each representing a different approach to historic and contemporary lettering traditions.

Signed in pencil by David Kindersley and dated March 1968. Numbered 8/50, from the limited edition of only 50.

The work also carries notable provenance from the Philip C. Duschnes Rare Books and First Editions collection, associated with the prominent New York rare-book dealer whose Manhattan business operated for decades during the 20th century.

Presented floating within a simple black painted wood frame, allowing the edges and margins of the sheet to remain visible. The warm terracotta field, charcoal-gray lettering and exuberant linear flourishes give the piece a distinctly mid-century graphic quality while reflecting centuries of European calligraphic tradition.
