Constructed of solid oak with a single hand-cut drawer, this country store table features turned baluster legs with canted, chamfered corner blocks and a two-board plank top. The drawer is fitted with a hand-forged iron pull plate, and its case is partially built from a salvaged Arbuckle’s coffee crate — the original stenciled lettering is still visible on the underside of the drawer bottom.
Tables like this served general-purpose duty in American country stores and farmhouses, used as work surfaces, sorting tables, or display counters for goods. The reuse of shipping crate lumber for interior construction — common practice among rural cabinetmakers and shopkeepers who worked with whatever materials were on hand — is a hallmark of the period and points to practical, small-shop origins rather than a formal furniture maker. Several fragments of period newsprint have bonded permanently to the tabletop where the original finish wore through, adding to the piece’s honest, well-used surface.
